The fastest way to get an accurate powder coating quote in San Marcos is to show us the part. Call us, stop by the shop, or send a few clear photos through our quote form along with what the part is, what it's made of and the finish you want. With that information we can tell you what the job involves and what it will take.
We don't quote without seeing the part or photos of it. Two parts that look alike on paper can need very different amounts of work, and a quick look is the only honest way to price them. This guide walks through what to send and what to expect.
Why we need to see the part first
Price for metal finishing depends on the part and its condition. A clean bracket that just needs a new color is a very different job from a rusty one with old paint, weld scale and a bent tab.
Most of the variation comes from preparation. Before any powder or plating goes on, the part is stripped and cleaned to bare metal, and anything left behind shows up in the finish. A part with heavy rust, several layers of old coating or pitted metal takes more prep than one that's already in good shape. For chrome and polishing, every scratch and pit has to be worked out first, since the shine shows every flaw. Our post on why surface prep matters goes into more detail.

What information to include
When you reach out, these details help us give you a useful answer:
- What the part is. A wheel, valve cover, frame, bracket, door knob, lamp or something else.
- What metal it's made of, if you know. Steel, aluminum, brass, copper and pot metal are handled differently, especially for plating. If you're not sure, that's fine. We can usually tell from photos or in person.
- The finish or color you want. For powder coating, you can browse the Prismatic Powders color catalog, which has more than 6,500 colors and effects, and send us the color name. Our colors page and our guide to choosing a powder coating color can help you narrow it down.
- How many pieces. One custom part and a production run of the same part are priced differently.
Which photos to send
Good photos save a lot of back-and-forth. A couple of shots usually does it:
- The whole part, so we can see its size and shape.
- Close-ups of any damage, such as rust, pitting, cracks, dents, curb rash or peeling finish.
Take them in good light and keep the part in focus. If there's anything that needs to stay uncoated, such as threads or a bearing surface, a photo of that area helps too.

Questions you can expect from us
Depending on the job, we may ask:
- Is the part still on the vehicle or item, or will it come in loose?
- Does it need any repair before finishing, like welding, dent removal or road rash repair?
- Are there surfaces that must stay bare, such as threads or mating faces?
- For plating, do you want a clear coat on brass or copper to protect the shine?
- Do you want a particular texture, like mirror, satin, brushed, line graining or sandblasted?
None of these are trick questions. They just help us understand the full scope so the quote matches the work.
Our four services under one roof
For 22 years we've handled four kinds of work in one shop, which means a single part can often go through several steps without leaving the building.
- Powder coating: wheels, frames, brackets, valve covers, intakes, exhaust, production parts, antiques, lanterns and home decor, from custom one-offs to production runs.
- Polishing: sandblasting, grinding, polishing, detail polishing and clear coating.
- Chrome and plating: copper, nickel, brass, chrome and triple chrome, on everything from motorcycle parts to door hardware and fixtures.
- Metal repair: brazing and soldering, welding, wheel road rash, trim straightening and dent removal, and bumper dent removal.

If you're not sure which service your part needs, describe what you're after and we'll point you in the right direction. You can also browse our gallery for examples of finished work.
